Times are changing. Medicine is moving from a ‘one size fits all’ to a personalized approach to optimize health outcomes. Even with attention to health and taking preventative measures, most people need medication at one point or another to manage an acute or chronic illness. We can take steps today to improve the way medications are used (or not used) for your body.
In this context, we will be discussing two important topics that can help you or a loved one today (and tomorrow!):
Deprescribing: is the planned and supervised process of reducing the dose of and/or stopping medication that might be causing harm, or no longer be of benefit. Deprescribing is part of good prescribing - backing off when doses are too high, or stopping medications that are no longer needed. Compounding can help to create individualized doses that may not be commercially available, and allows for slower (and, often, more effective) titration schedules.
Pharmacogenetics: is the study of genetic differences in drug metabolic pathways (how YOUR body processes medications) which can affected responses to drugs both in terms of therapeutic effects as well as possible side effects. A simple test can look at how your body would process >150 medications including things like analgesics, cardiovascular medications including blood pressure and erectile dysfunction drugs, estradiol-containing contraceptives, and many psychiatric medications. Your genes don’t change, so this test is great to do at any stage in life, whether on medications or not, to optimize your future care.
